One of the biggest surprise hits of 2018 was Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade, a futuristic sci-fi thriller that follows a technophobe who becomes paralysed in an unprovoked attack and receives cybernetic upgrades to seek revenge. However, since the film’s release, there has been speculation whether or not audiences will get to see a follow-up.
Now, in a recent interview with Fandom to promote the release of The Invisible Man [read our review here], Whannell confirmed he is interested in developing a sequel to Upgrade and would love to have a bigger budget than the first instalment despite Blumhouse characteristically focusing on low budget films.
“We’ll see. A sequel is a champagne problem created by the success of a movie,” Whannell said. “So Hollywood economics dictates whether there’s going to be a sequel, and Upgrade… I wouldn’t exactly call it a monster hit. I’d call it a cult hit, and cult hits, when they look at the books of cult hits, they’re like ‘Nyah, sequel’. So we’ll see. I loved making that film, so I’d love to do it with a bit more money.”
Producer Jason Blum also expressed his interest in making a follow-up to Upgrade but revealed there are no immediate plans as of yet.
“I would love an Upgrade sequel,” Blum added. “I will say that we haven’t put it to bed yet. We have no immediate plans, but Upgrade is very much on my mind, and on Leigh’s mind as well.”
