Tom Holland says Sony had a “really wonderful idea” for Spider-Man if a deal hadn’t been reached with Disney

Spider-Man/Peter Parker star Tom Holland has revealed that Sony had a contingency plan in place if it hadn’t reached a deal with Disney last year and talks regarding Spider-Man’s future in the MCU had broken down.

In a recent interview with MTV International, Holland claims Sony had a “really, really wonderful idea” for an exit strategy that set up a bright future for Spider-Man without the MCU.

“The future of Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony we had a really, really wonderful idea of how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU,” Holland said. “Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confident they were going to do justice and make a film that was the calibre that Spider-Man requires.”

He adds, “But that said, I’m really glad to be back in the MCU and to have the team back together because I kind of fell that’s where he belongs now. I’m really grateful that Bob Iger and Tom Rothman allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home. It was a pretty cool experience and also the best bragging rights ever: I saved Spider-Man.”

While it’s great to know that Sony did create a backup plan for the future of Spider-Man, many Marvel fans are presumably joyous that the two studios managed to find the middle ground after it looked for a time like Far From Home was to be the web-slinger’s final outing in the MCU.

The next Spider-Man film is the as-yet-untitled follow-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home which is set to start filming in July through to November in locations including Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Iceland. It will see Jon Watts returning to the director’s chair with Tom Holland (Peter Parker) and Zendaya (MJ) reprising their roles with a release date set for 16th July 2021.
