Amazon Studios acquires Dave Bautista family action comedy My Spy from STX

April 9, 2020 by EJ Moreno

My Spy, the family action-comedy once set for a theatrical release in the U.S., has been acquired from STX by Amazon Studios.

The movie was supposed to hit theaters in the U.S. on April 17th and had already begun rolling out overseas, including in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Due to the on-going global health crisis, STX decided against bringing to the theaters in the states. Amazon has exclusively picked up the film for the U.S. and other vital foreign territories.

This move is another instance where a film that has forgone a theatrical release and going straight to streaming. Netflix picked up Paramount comedy The Lovebirds, and Disney announced it would skip a theatrical release for Artemis Fowl, instead placing it on their streaming platform, Disney+.

The streamer has yet to set a release date for My Spy.

MY SPY follows J.J. a hardened CIA operative (Dave Bautista) who has been demoted and finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl named Sophie (Chloe Coleman) where he has been sent undercover begrudgingly to surveil her family. When Sophie discovers hidden cameras in her apartment she uses her tech savviness to locate where the surveillance operation is set. In exchange for not blowing J.J.’s cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy. Despite his reluctance J.J. finds he is no match for Sophie’s disarming charm and wit.
