The New Mutants has garnered a lot of coverage over the last few years for the disastrous mishandling of the movie regarding its release date, and while audiences have debated whether or not Disney should release it on Disney+ or Hulu, director Josh Boone has revealed why the studio has no choice but to pursue a theatrical release.
In an interview with Collider, Boone explained that the studio is contractually obligated to release The New Mutants into movie theatres before releasing it on other platforms.
“With most movies, you sign contracts that guarantee a theatrical release, so it needs to open to ever go digital in the first place,” Boone says. “We just, too, would like to see people to see it in the theatre. But it needs to obviously be at the right time when it’s safe to go back.”

While audiences are still unaware of when we will get to view The New Mutants as the release date is consistently changing, Boone has also recently revealed the official runtime for the X-Men spinoff and confirmed there will be at least 20 minutes of deleted scenes.
The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
