Tenet cut by 9 seconds in the UK to achieve 12A rating from the BBFC

August 17, 2020 by Gary Collinson

While UK audiences are going to get to see Christopher Nolan’s Tenet a week before its release in the United States, it seems we won’t be getting the movie in its entirety as The British Board of Film Classification has announced that 9 seconds have been cut from the UK theatrical release in order to achieve a 12A rating.

“During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification,” reads the BBFC’s statement. “Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission. This film was originally seen for advice. The company was advised it was likely to be classified 15 uncut but that their preferred 12A classification could be obtained by making small changes to one scene to remove shots of a man kicking a woman.”

The 12A rating for Tenet has been granted for “moderate violence, threat, domestic abuse, and infrequent strong language.” Presumably, the missing 9 seconds will be reinstated for its home entertainment release.

Armed with only one word – Tenet – and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Tenet sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.
