Jamie Foxx confirms he’s still attached to Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot

August 19, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Despite recent comments from Todd McFarlane indicating that the actor may have abandoned the project to its Development Hell, Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx has confirmed to Yahoo! that he remains attached to the title role in the long-gestating Spawn reboot.

“I surprised Todd McFarlane,” said Foxx, explaining how his involvement with the project came about. “I said, ‘Bro, I know that one day you will do this movie, and I hope you will keep me in mind.’ What Black Panther did was let us know that it’s so necessary, and it’s the time. And Spawn is just an interesting character in itself. The heads that are being put together to bring you something special — look out.”

McFarlane has been trying to get his Spawn reboot off the ground for over a decade now, but has struggled to get it moving due to his insistence that he directs and retains creative control. Things looked up in 2017 when the project found a home at Blumhouse Productions, with Foxx and Jeremy Renner boarding the comic book adaptation the following year as Spawn and Detective ‘Twitch’ Williams respectively.

Nevertheless, things stagnated once again, with McFarlane claiming late last year that the success of Joker has renewed interest in Spawn, and teasing this past May that there has been a “seismic event” and an “enormous amount of activity” on the project lately. Whether that means it’s finally close to becoming a reality, we shall have to wait and see…
