Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, reveals why the Star Wars show decided to keep Baby Yoda a secret.
When it comes to marketing a TV show or film, it makes sense to show off your most exciting hook to get fans excited before the premiere. However, this wasn’t the tactic that The Mandalorian took with Baby Yoda.
The character arrived on the show as a huge surprise, delighting audiences and instantly becoming the star attraction. Why didn’t The Mandalorian include Baby Yoda in the show’s marketing? Creator Jon Favreau explained to THR (via Screen Rant):
“I thought it was very important to establish that there were going to be surprises. When you are promoting a film, you are putting your best stuff out there in the marketing campaign because you want everybody to show up that Friday. Television is different. You want to be able to build. You want word-of-mouth to spread. You want people to tune in and know that something is going to happen that they are going to want to talk about.”

Well, the plan certainly worked. Baby Yoda has been the talk of the town ever since his debut and has certainly shown that there are big surprises waiting for fans. This trend continued with the debut of the Darksaber in live-action in season one’s final episode. Hopefully, season two has plenty more surprises waiting for us to discover!
The Mandalorian season two is set to premiere in October 2020 and sees the returning Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), Gina Carano (Cara Dune), Carl Weathers (Greef Karga), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon) and Bill Burr (Mayfield) alongside new cast additions Rosario Dawson (Daredevil), Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Katee Sackhoff (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Timothy Olyphant (Justified) and Michael Biehn (The Terminator).
