While the future of the Star Trek film series is currently unknown, one star from the J.J. Abrams franchise is still hopeful to reprise his role in a future instalment.
In an interview on the podcast Things Are Going Great For Me, Chris Pine admitted that he still hopes he can strike a new deal and reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk in the next Star Trek movie.
“I haven’t heard anything,” Pine says. “I mean, I get asked these questions all the time. I’m like the last person to find anything out. So, I’ve heard — what have I heard? Tarantino is going to do one. And then, who is it? Noah Hawley was going to do something else, and then that fell through. And then he’s going to do something with the Discovery, the new Alex Kurtzman-led cast. So, I really don’t know. I know that Paramount is coming out of having restructured a bit and kind of a major corporate restructuring. So hopefully, when all that dust settles, something concrete will come out of it, and we’ll get to work. I’d love to do it.”
Paramount Pictures originally intended on jumping straight into Star Trek 4 after 2016’s Star Trek Beyond with the plan to have Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk meet up with his father George Kirk, played by Thor star Chris Hemsworth. However, after Paramount and Bad Robot failed to reach a contract deal with Pine, the project was ultimately shelved.
Besides the original plan for Star Trek 4, there were two other ideas in discussions for the future of the film franchise including Quentin Tarantino pitching an idea for “Pulp Fiction in space”, and Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley developing a film that focuses on a lethal virus which wipes out vast parts of the universe – a project which has recently been put on hold.
