Back in 1984, director David Lynch adapted Frank Herbert’s Dune and starred Kyle MacLachlan, however, the film was released to a mixed reception from audiences and critics alike after the studio was largely involved and ultimately denied him the final cut of the film.
Now in an interview with Empire, director Denis Villeneuve, who is helming the upcoming adaptation of Dune, has offered his thoughts on the 1984 film and revealed that he was left feeling “half-satisfied.”
“I’m a big David Lynch fan, he’s the master,” Villeneuve said. “When I saw [Lynch]’s Dune I remember being excited, but his take… there are parts that I love and other elements that I am less comfortable with. So it’s like, I remember being half-satisfied. That’s why I was thinking to myself, ‘There’s still a movie that needs to be made about that book, just a different sensibility.’”

Despite Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation being one of the most highly anticipated films of 2020, Lynch has previously stated that he has “zero interest” in the latest adaptation of Dune due to his prior frustrations during production on his 1984 version.
“I have zero interest in Dune,” Lynch said. “Because it was a heartache for me. It was a failure and I didn’t have final cut. I’ve told this story a billion times. It’s not the film I wanted to make. I like certain parts of it very much — but it was a total failure for me.”
