Sacha Baron Cohen has secretly made Borat 2

September 10, 2020 by Ricky Church

It has been over 10 years since Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat was released and Cohen retired his fan-favourite character, but now it seems he is about to make a big return. Collider has reported that Cohen has secretly shot Borat 2 and has even screened it for studios and industry executives.

Borat was first created for Cohen’s Da Ali G Show, interviewing various people in the UK and US in satirical and often embarrassing segments. The character Borat Sagdiyev is a journalist from the country Kazakhstan and has divergent social viewpoints from Western culture and breaks or is unaware of social taboos that make his interviewees uncomfortable.

The character made it to the big screen in 2006’s Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan in which he travelled across the United States after falling in love with Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson in an attempt to marry her. During his travels he also exposes some of America’s own political incorrectness and breaking of taboos. Most of the people in the film were not paid actors, but real people who believed the film was a documentary and unaware of Cohen’s onscreen personality.

The sequel will apparently see Borat going undercover after his popularity rose with the release of his documentary. Cohen filmed most of Borat 2 in the streets of Los Angeles.

The original Borat gained a wide amount of praise for its comedy and insight, earning $262 million worldwide and Cohen a Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a comedy. The film was directed by Larry Charles with Cohen and Jay Roach (Bombshell) producing. It is not known yet if Charles and Roach are involved in the sequel.
