Netflix on track to release more original content in 2021 than this year

September 11, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Despite the ongoing pandemic, Netflix is still on track to release more original content in 2021 than this year, according to CEO Reed Hastings.

There was a time when you could be fully aware of every new original show or film coming to Netflix but the service has since vastly expanded their output, going for the ‘more is better’ route rather than carefully focusing on a select crop of content.

The trend is set to continue in 2021 according to CEO Reed Hastings, who has told Variety that even though the pandemic is causing issues, they are on track to release more original programming than this year:

“Next year, we’ve planned out the year — we’ve got a great selection of content. It’s still more originals than this year. It’s not up by as much as we first forecast, but it is up on a year-over-year basis. Of course in Europe we’re producing, in Asia we’re producing. We’re all hopeful for a vaccine, so we can get back to more intensive work.”

The regular supply of new and original content is certainly one of Netflix’s biggest selling points. So subscribers should be pleased to hear that this is set to continue despite the pandemic’s best efforts. How long they can keep this, of course, will depend on global circumstances and the production of a vaccine.
