Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Revival is no longer happening

January 6, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Last year, it was announced that director Mike Flanagan, who has previously helmed Netflix’s Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, was set to adapt another Stephen King novel, this time the 2014 novel Revival. However, recently taking to Twitter, the filmmaker has announced that the project is no longer moving forward.

Sadly, it's not. That project won't be moving forward unfortunately. While REVIVAL and MIDNIGHT MASS both involve priests, MIDNIGHT MASS was conceived several years before REVIVAL was published, and similarities stop at the white collar. Really wish I could've done them both!

— Mike Flanagan (@flanaganfilm) January 4, 2021

Revival explores “the relationship between a heroin-addicted musician and a dubious faith healer with a hidden agenda. The minister is obsessed with trying to find a way to communicate with his departed wife and child but ends up connecting to a Lovecraftian horror.”

While Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Revival is no longer happening, the filmmaker is currently developing two different series including a new Netflix horror series titled Midnight Mass which follows an isolated island community experiencing miraculous events- and frightening omens – after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest.

The filmmaker is also set to adapt Christopher Pike‘s 1994 novel The Midnight Club as a Netflix series which takes place at Rotterdam Home, a hospice for terminally ill teenagers and follows a group of patients who begin to gather together at midnight to share scary stories. However, they eventually make a pact that whichever of them dies first will contact the others from beyond the grave.
