Antebellum promised so much, with a poster that screamed ‘From the Producers of Get Out and Us‘, a headline performance from Janelle Monáe, and an intriguing high-concept that would draw together resonant themes about race and politics. Then came a twist more unexpected than the one at the heart of the film when the pandemic hit and Antebellum was delayed. Now, almost a year after it was initially meant to be released, it has found a home amongst Sky Cinema’s slate of 30 new movies for 2021.
Managing a PVOD release in the US, Antebellum was met with much derision, garnering a 23% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and earning a ★★ review from our US critic Robert Kojder, but remains a fascinating prospect thanks to the promise of a controversial twist which has caused much discussion amongst those who’ve seen it.
Reports have earmarked Antebellum for an April release on Sky Cinema, where it will sit alongside other exclusive acquisitions such as Yuval Adler’s The Secrets We Keep, starring Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman, and Every Breath You Take, starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan.
Successful author Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.
