13 years after its release and two spin-offs on, Cloverfield will be getting a direct sequel written by Joe Barton, the new showrunner behind HBO Max’s The Batman spin-off centred around the Gotham City Police Department, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Released in 2008, Cloverfield was a found footage film which followed a group of friends in New York City as it came under attack from a mysterious alien monster. The film was coincidentally directed by The Batman‘s Matt Reeves with Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams producing through Bad Robot.
The Cloverfield sequel will be a direct sequel to Reeves’ film, but will not utilize the found footage method of the first film. Abrams will again produce through Bad Robot, but Reeves will not be involved in the new film.
While it has not produced a sequel until now, Paramount did develop two pseudo-spin-offs with 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox. 10 Cloverfield Lane was its own separate film about a young woman, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who was trapped in the doomsday bunker of a mysterious man, played by John Goodman, after he claimed an attack of some sort happened worldwide. The film was a success at the box office, but The Cloverfield Paradox tried to connect to the original film and was not a success either critically or on Netflix when it was released.
