Free-to-play multiplayer games are a dime-a-dozen these days. Obviously RPGs are the most famous derivative of this category, but plenty of other genres, from MOBAs to survival games to even pirate adventures, have been produced in equal measure by companies hoping to strike gold. If you can commit even a thousand players to a freemium model, you’ve got a steady revenue stream.
Valorant was one such attempt. A first-person shooter with tactical elements, Valorant hyped itself on multiple gameplay modes, unique class-types, and super powers specific to every character. Yet the end result was severe balancing issues, barely any maps, and “smurfing”.
