Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie adds Edgar Ramirez as the villain Atlas

April 6, 2021 by Liam Waddington

With the Eli Roth-directed adaptation of the popular video game franchise Borderlands currently in production, it has finally been revealed who the villain of the film will be and who will be portraying him.

According to Deadline, Edgar Ramirez, who starred in HBO’s The Undoing and Netflix’s Yes Day, has joined the cast as Atlas,  a wealthy arms manufacturer and the most powerful person in the Borderlands universe.

Director Eli Roth provided a statement on the casting of Ramirez: “What an incredible honor to have an actor of Edgar’s caliber, talent, and charisma playing opposite Cate Blanchett and this remarkable cast,” Roth said. “Atlas has to be a truly magnetic personality, someone with charisma and charm but that air of menace underneath it all. I’ve been a fan of Edgar’s since his early performances and he continues to amaze me with each dramatic turn. We want to create something wild, fun, and very different from anything they’ve seen from Edgar before. I am so, so excited to work with him.”

The Borderlands franchise takes place in the distant future, as ‘Vault Hunters’ travel to the distant planet of Pandora to hunt for an ancient alien vault filled with advanced technology and weapons.

The film will also star Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Haley Bennett as a newly created character who is key to Lilith’s past.

The Borderlands movie is set to be directed by Eli Roth with Avi and Ari Arad producing along with Erik Feig, executive producer of the video game franchise and founder of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford will serve as executive producer on the adaptation. Craig Mazin, who won an Emmy for writing Chernobyl, has written the latest draft for the film.
