The Uncut Gems co-director Benny Safdie is no longer a hidden gem in Hollywood. From his memorable turn in Good Time, which he also co-directed with his brother Josh Safdie, to his recent casting in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, the filmmaker is on fire. Now, he can add starring in an adaptation of a beloved novel to that list.
Safdie will join Kelly Fremon Craig’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, based on Judy Blume’s classic of the same name. He’ll play Margaret’s father, Herb. Ant-Man star Abby Ryder Fortson will play the titular Margaret, while Rachel McAdams will play her mother, Barbara. Kathy Bates rounds out the cast as Margaret’s grandmother, Sylvia.
In the novel sixth-grader, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, sixth-grader Margaret moves from the city to the suburbs and begins to question faith and her life as she enters puberty. Due to her parent’s interfaith marriage, she grows up without any set religion and begins searching for one. Benny Safie’s character Herb is a Jewish insurance salesman, while McAdams’ Barbara is a Christian housewife who enjoys painting.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is currently in production.
