Greta Gerwig will move from Little Women to an even smaller woman with the news that she’ll officially be directing Margot Robbie in the live-action Barbie movie.
A Barbie movie has been remodelled and repackaged at various stages over the past few years, with both Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) and Anne Hathaway (The Hustle) set to take on the Mattel icon. Margot Robbie came on-board as a producer in 2019, and now has let slip in an interview with British Vogue that Gerwig has decided to graduate from screenplay duties and sit in the director’s chair for Warner Bros. and Mattel Films.
Robbie said “People generally hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
Gerwig, who notched up an Oscar nomination for Lady Bird, is currently filming White Noise for Noah Baumbach, who she has been sharing screenplay duties with on Barbie. Once wrapped they’ll open the toy box, with production set to start in 2022.
