Anna Kendrick is something of a genre chameleon; having navigated science-fiction for Netflix’s Stowaway, been a veteran of musical-comedy thanks to the Pitch Perfect trilogy, and recently been cast in serial-killer quiz show drama Rodney and Cheryl, she has now signed on to headline Lionsgate’s psychological thriller Alice, Darling for first-time feature director Mary Nighy.
According to Deadline Kendrick joins Loki‘s Wunmi Mosaku and The Man in the High Castle‘s Kaniehtiio Horn on the film, which focuses on Kendrick’s Alice, who is behaving strangely, and keeping secrets about her mercurial boyfriend (Charlie Carrick) from her two best friends. When the three friends take a girl’s trip out of town, all secrets are revealed when a local girl goes missing and Alice’s boyfriend arrives unannounced.
In a statement, Nighty, who has acted in BBC Drama Spooks, as well as Sofia Coppola’s Mary Antoinette, said “Alice, Darling is a subtle, nuanced story about coercion and control. As a director, I couldn’t wish for a better cast of talented actors and creatives to bring this important story to life. The chemistry between Anna Kendrick, Wunmi Mosaku, and Kaniehtiio Horn as the three friends is a joy to see.”

Kendrick has scored big with Lionsgate before, with Paul Feig’s similarly twisted tale of friendship, A Simple Favour, grossing almost $100M back in 2018. Production is currently underway in Canada.
