Fans of the First Doctor will be happy to hear that Big Finish have released two brand new full cast audio dramas with Doctor Who: The Early Adventures. Both of these new audio dramas feature star-studded casts and a couple of familiar enemies.
The first of the two new audio dramas available today is After the Daleks and focuses on the events that happen in the aftermath of 1964 television episode ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’.
Although the invasion by the Daleks is over, there’s still a lot to do to rebuild and Susan is trying to help rebuild society, however not all survivors see it as a chance to restore what was destroyed, rather a chance to claim power for themselves. It’s not just the corrupt survivors that Susan should worry about, it’s also a lone Dalek and one that has the aim of reclaiming the Earth.
After the Daleks features Carole Ann Ford reprising her original role as classic companion Susan Foreman, Lucy Briers (Pride and Prejudice, Emma) as Jenny Chaplin, Sean Biggerstaff (Harry Potter, Jenny the Doctor’s Daughter), Oli Higginson (Bridgerton, The Pursuit of Love), Jonathan Guy Lewis (London’s Burning, Coronation Street) and Nicholas Briggs as the Daleks.
The second audio drama is The Secrets of Det-Sen and precedes the events of The Abominable Snowmen (a mostly lost story of Doctor Who). The Doctor, Steven and Dodo have arrived in the Himalayas and join a pilgrimage to the nearby Det-Sen monastery, but things aren’t as they seem and they will have to uncover the monastery’s secrets before it’s too late.
Peter Purves takes the roles of the First Doctor and Steven Taylor, Lauren Cornelius plays Dodo Chaplet and the cast is completed by Jeremy Ang Jones (Cicero: The Crossroads, Torchwood), Paul Courtenay Hyu (ATA Girl, Doctor Who), Kerry Gooderson (Torchwood, Vienna) and Jamie Zubairi (Dark Shadows, Cucumber).
Producer Alfie Shaw said: “Reading these scripts was like uncovering two lost stories from the 1960s. We had to use very modern techniques (all together now – home recording!) for The Secrets of Det-Sen, but due to the great cast and director, as well as Toby Hrycek-Robinson working his magic on sound design and music, it evokes the 60s perfectly.”
Doctor Who – The Early Adventures: After the Daleks and The Secrets of Det-Sen are now available as digital downloads at £12.99 each or as collector’s edition CDs at £14.99 each. Big Finish listeners can order both for £28 on CD or £25 digital download.
