A one-time Superman is joining another magical world of powers. Brandon Routh is joining the upcoming Netflix series Magic: The Gathering.
Routh will play the character of Gideon Jura, which was confirmed during Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Showcase 2021 stream. From the card game, Gideon Jura is described as “a hieromancer and planeswalker beholden to the multiplanar coalition known as the Gatewatch.” Routh’s Gideon Jura will serve as the lead for the series.
At the time of writing, there are very few plot details. What we do know is the Netflix series will “expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are the game’s magic-wielding heroes and villains.”
This news comes days after The Russo Brothers exited the project, leaving Jeff Kline to head the series. Steve Melching, who will co-executive produce and serve as story editor. Izzy Medrano is the project’s art director and will see Snowball Studios head the animation, replacing Bardel Entertainment.
The Magic: The Gathering tabletop card game was first released in 1993. Since then, it’s spawned a passionate fanbase that still goes strong to this day. In addition to the card game, there’s a digital game, esports league, comic books, and a best-selling novel.
