Five years on from NBC’s aborted attempt at a sequel series, IMDb TV is taking another stab at bringing Cruel Intentions to the small screen with plans for a television reboot of the 1999 teen thriller.
The potential series is being written by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, the writing team behind Amazon’s upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer, and “revolves around two ruthless step siblings who will do anything to stay on top — in this case, of the Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington, D.C. college. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do whatever’s necessary to preserve their power and reputations — even seduce the daughter of the vice president of the United States.”
The original film featured a cast that included Sarah Michelle Gellar (who was also attached to reprise her role as Kathryn Merteuil in NBC’s sequel), Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe and Selma Blair. None of the original cast or creative team are involved with this reboot, save for producer Neal Moritz who is executive producing alongside Fisher and Goodman.
