Recently, it has been a trend for journalists to ask every director possible whether they would be interested in potentially directing a superhero movie in the future – which has received mostly negative results.
However, during an AFI Fest screening of Parallel Mothers (via Variety), director Pedro Almodóvar (Pain and Glory) has gone the other way and revealed that he would like to direct a Batgirl movie, stating that: “I would like to do something with Batgirl, but I would have to do it in my own way.”
Unfortunately for the Academy Award-winning director, there is already a Batgirl movie in development for HBO Max from the Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah which is currently slated for a 2022 release. The film is written by Birds of Prey, The Flash and Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson with Kristin Burr producing.

The Batgirl film is set to star In The Heights‘ Leslie Grace, who dons the cape and cowl as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life) whose role is currently being kept under wraps, and Brendan Fraser who will be playing the villainous Firefly. It has also been confirmed that J.K. Simmons is set to reprise his role from Zack Snyder’s Justice League as Barbara’s father Commissioner Jim Gordon.
