Robert Rodriguez is returning to his Spy Kids franchise as he and Netflix are teaming up to relaunch it with a new film for the streaming service.
The news comes exactly 21 years after the release of the first Spy Kids film in 2001. It starred Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara as Carmen and Juni Cortez who discover their parents Gregorio and Ingrid, played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino, are actually retired spies and follow in their footsteps as they have to rescue their parents from captivity. The film launched a franchise which includes three sequels and a Netflix animated television series.
Rodriguez will write, direct and produce the new Spy Kids film. It is unknown if any of the original cast will return, but it is said the new entry will introduce a new family of spies to the franchise. Spy Kids is also notable for introducing the character Machete as played by Danny Trejo, who would go on to star in his own series of films from Rodriguez that are quite the opposite of the kid-friendly adventures of Spy Kids with the ultra-violent and B-movie style Machete and its sequel Machete Kills.
The Spy Kids relaunch will be produced by Spyglass Media, Skydance Media and Netflix. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce and oversee development while Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre will executive produce with Elizabeth Avellan and Racer Max producing.
