When it was released back in 2019 we said in our ★★★★ review of Alex Parkinson and Richard de Costa’s nerve shredding deep sea documentary Last Breath that it made “The Abyss look like a dip in the shallow end”, and it appears that Hollywood agree, because news has just emerged that Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Djimon Hounsou are set to star in a feature adaptation.
Deadline reports that Woody Harrelson (Venom: Let There Be Carnage), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings), and Djimon Hounsou (Shazam!) will star in the fact-based thriller, which will be helmed by Alex Parkinson, who co-directed the documentary.
Last Breath, which is currently available on Netflix in the UK, chronicles a diving expedition in 2012, where Chris Lemons, who was a member of the dozen strong crew tasked with descending beneath the crashing waves of the North Sea to repair a seabed structure, became detached from his vessel, with five minutes of oxygen in his tank, and little chance of survival.
It really is worth going into whichever iteration of the story you decide to watch knowing as little as possible, because there are a couple of jaw-dropping moments that make this perfect for a 127 Hours style adaptation.
It isn’t known who will portray the stricken diver yet, but the report did reveal that Liu will play the character of Dave, who executes the rescue on the bottom of the sea, and who must maintain his composure and keep his emotions in check as he races against the survival clock.
