21 years later and Robert Rodriguez has found a new Spy Kids family for his Netflix, Skydance and Spyglass remake of the much beloved family action franchise. The roles will be filled by Annihilation‘s Gina Rodriguez, Shazam! star Zachary Levi, The Afterparty‘s Everly Carganilla, and newcomer Connor Esterson.
Deadline report that this latest Spy Kids chapter, which is being produced, written and directed by Rodriguez, is about what happens when the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, leading them to become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.
The original Spy Kids launched in 2001 and starred Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara. It grossed $150M worldwide and spawned 3 sequels over the following decade, raking in almost $550M for the modestly budgeted franchise.
Robert Rodriguez has directed all four films in the franchise, and this will mark his second collaboration with Netflix following 2020’s well-received We Can Be Heroes.
