After its record-breaking fourth season, the world of Stranger Things is expanding beyond the Upside Down as The Duffer Brothers are teaming with Hilary Leavitt on the new Netflix production outfit Upside Down Pictures, and on the list of projects for the budding company is more Stranger Things.
Along with the long-discussed spin-off series, we’re also set to see a stage play set within the world and mythos of Stranger Things. Little is known about the spin-off, but Deadline reports it will be based on an original idea by The Duffer Brothers, with Upside Down and 21 Laps producing.
The stage play sees prolific UK-based stage producer Sonia Friedman producing alongside Stephen Daldry and Netflix. Daldry, whose credits include The Crown, Billy Elliot, and The Reader, will also direct. 21 Laps will serve as Associate Producer. There’s no further news on the stage production, but fans will surely be hoping for more ‘80s songs to match the series’ iconic soundtracks.
The stage play and spin-off series will likely have quite the following as interest in the series is at an all-time high. Stranger Things 4 topped Netflix’s all-time most popular English TV list with 1.15 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days, making it only the second series to cross the billion mark for the streamer. That number will undoubtedly increase massively when the Volume 2 episodes are counted after they reach the 28-day viewing period.
