Having been the subject of two animated TV shows and a cameo in both Wreck-It Ralph and Adam Sandler blockbuster misfire Pixels, it was inevitable that one day 80s arcade classic Pac-Man would follow the pellets all the way to his own big-screen adventure.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Bandai Namco Entertainment and Wayfarer Studios will insert the coins on a adaptation of the popular maze muncher game, which will come from an original idea by Sonic the Hedgehog‘s Chuck Williams of Lightbeam Entertainment.
With videogame adaptations no longer the roll-of-the-dice gamble they used to be following the box-office success of Detective Pikachu ($433M), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($400M), and Uncharted ($400M), studios are looking through their boxes of old cartridges to find the next blockbuster franchise, and with the spin-off potential from Ms. Pac-Man, as well as the ghosts, Namco believe they could achieve a pretty high score with Toru Iwatani’s arcade icon.
Pac-Man, who was originally called Puck-Man in Japan, is a game in which the player guides the titular character through a series of mazes attempting to gobble up pellets, all while being pursued by four ghosts.
