R.I.P. Alan Rickman (1946 – 2016)

January 14, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Some very sad news today, with the family of Alan Rickman announcing that the much-loved British actor has passed aged 69 after a battle with cancer.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Rickman worked on the stage throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, earning critical acclaim, along with a Tony Award nomination, before enjoying his big screen breakthrough as the villainous Hans Gruber in the 1988 action classic Die Hard.

In 1991, he won a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and was also nominated for Leading Actor for Truly, Madly, Deeply. He would also receive a Golden Globe in 1997 for his work in the TV movie Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny, before enjoying his biggest career successes as Professor Severus Snape in the blockbuster Harry Potter film series, appearing in all eight instalments.

In addition to his extensive acting credits, Rickman also directed two feature films in 1997’s The Winter Guest and 2014’s A Little Chaos.
