Unless you’re wearing spandex or pocketing $2 billion from Pandora, the post-pandemic box-office landscape is still a pretty daunting one, especially if you’re a mid-range adult film, so the news that Amazon Studios are to grant Ben Affleck’s directorial return a wide theatrical release is welcome news indeed.
Air, which stars his fellow Good Will Hunting co-Oscar winner and regular collaborator Matt Damon, will get a global theatrical release on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, and will have a longer theatrical window than Amazon Studios’ recent theatrical releases, before heading to Prime Video.
Air chronicles the revolutionary partnership between a young Michael Jordan and Nike’s fledgling basketball division, which changed the world of sports and contemporary culture with the instantly recognisible Air Jordan brand.
Affleck directs Damon for the first time as Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, while he also steps in front of the camera to play Nike co-founder Phil Knight, with Jason Bateman as Rob Strasser, Chris Messina as David Falk, Matthew Maher as Peter Moore, Marlon Wayans as George Raveling, Chris Tucker as Howard White, Viola Davis as Deloris Jordan, Gustaf Skarsgård as Horst Dassler, and Julius Tennon as James Jordan.
Amazon Studios will distribute the film worldwide, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling the international release as part of its distribution deal with Amazon’s MGM. Air will be the first wide theatrical release from Amazon since Mindy Kaling’s Late Night, which had a wide summer release in 2019.
