It seems like making fake movie trailers a reality is a current trend.
After Eli Roth began production of Thanksgiving – the faux trailer featured in Grindhouse – another filmmaker wants to make one of his most infamous non-films a reality.
Grindhouse director Robert Rodriguez crafted a trailer for Machete Kills Again…in Space, sending his fanbase ablaze. Since its release, we haven’t heard much about the Danny Trejo-led adventure, but don’t think Rodriguez has forgotten about it.
Robert Rodriguez recently spoke at 2023 South by Southwest, and he, of course, was asked about the third Machete movie.
Rodriguez told the SXSW audience, “I put a fake trailer for that on Machete 2 to kind of satisfy (fans). ‘Okay, this is pretty much what it would look like, but you can see it in two minutes rather than two hours.’ And it never satisfies them, so we have to do it. But you know, the original was just a fake trailer on Grindhouse. … (Fans) would bug us for years, ‘When’s that movie coming out?’ I said, ‘It was a fake trailer.’ ‘No, but it looked real! When is it coming out?'”
Adding, “So we gotta make it for them. It wasn’t meant to be a film; the audience just wanted it. So we have to give it to them. When someone wants something that bad, we never had that with any movie before. Now everyone’s still ‘Machete in Space!’ You can’t give ’em enough.”

The faux trailer for Machete Kills Again…in Space premiered during 2013’s Machete Kills, the follow-up to the 2010 original cult classic. Since then, the filmmaker has helmed Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and the underrated Alita: Battle Angel; he’s even begun production on a new Spy Kids entry.
As he returns to his classics or invents new cult favorites, it is time for a fresh look at Machete in the most ridiculous way.
