Shazam! director closes door on more superheroes, returning to horror roots

March 21, 2023 by EJ Moreno

David F. Sandberg is contemplating his cinematic future, and it seems like no more superheroes are ahead.

As his latest outing, Shazam! Fury of the Gods brought in just $30.5 million during its opening weekend; the filmmaker and DC Studios are obviously unhappy. While the studio will have to sit with this loss, Sandberg is already moving forward and returning to his horror roots.

“On Rotten Tomatoes I just got my lowest critic score and my highest audience score on the same film 🤷‍♂️ I wasn’t expecting a repeat of the first movie critically but I was still a little surprised because I think it’s a good film,” he wrote. “Oh well. As I’ve been saying for a while now I’m very eager to go back to horror (as well as trying some new things). After six years of Shazam I’m definitely done with superheroes for now.”

“Just to be clear, I don’t regret even for a second making the Shazam movies,” he continued. “I’ve learned so much and gotten to work with some truly amazing people. Will forever be grateful that I got to direct two of these! They’ve been very challenging but valuable experiences. One thing I’ve really been looking forward to is disconnecting from the superhero discourse online. A lot of that stresses me out so much and it will be nice not having to think about that anymore.”

Before directing this year’s Shazam sequel and the 2019 original outing, Sandberg was best known for his work in horror films. The director helmed 2016’s Lights Out and 2017’s Annabelle: Creation. The filmmaker is reportedly in pre-production for a horror film and will likely aim for a low-budget, high-grossing indie horror that is all the rage nowadays.

Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods is directed by David F. Sandberg and sees the return of Zachary Levi alongside fellow cast members Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody as Freddy Freeman, Faith Herman and Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Ian Chen and Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand and D.J. Cotrona as Pedro Pena, Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, and Djimon Hounsou as The Wizard. New additions to the cast include Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, and Rachel Zegler as Anthea.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is in cinemas now.
