Bolstered by stellar reviews and strong word-of-mouth, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves rolled a double-six, or whatever the 23-sided dice equivalent is at the worldwide box-office this weekend, grossing an above-expectations $71.5 million.
The Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Game Night) directed board-game adaptation dethroned John Wick: Chapter 4 at the North American box-office, earning $38.5 million for the weekend. Paramount Pictures and eOne will be hoping that this strong start is a sign that Dungeons & Dragons will enjoy a lengthily campaign at the box-office. With a production budget in the region of $150 million plus marketing costs, hopes of a sequel and that oh-so-precious shared universe rest on the next couple of weeks and the international performance.
John Wick has no such worries, because despite dropping to second place with $28.2 million in its sophomore outing, the third sequel in the action franchise is on course to top 2019’s Parabellum, which finished its global run with $328 million. The Chad Stahelski directed film currently stands at $122.7 million in North America and a whopping $245 million worldwide after just 10 days of release.
It’s not such good news for everyone though, because New Line/DC/WB’s Shazam!: Fury of the Gods continued to haemorrhage money during its third week of release. Dropping to number 6 in the charts with a $4.7 million weekend, the sequel now has a domestic tally of of $53.6 million, which is only slightly more than the original’s $53.5 million opening back in 2019. Internationally the film stands at $119.6 million. All of this arrives on the day that Warner Bros. are set to unveil the trailer for another of their pre-DC shake-up cinematic offerings in Blue Beetle. Stay tuned for more.
