Jonathan Groff joins new Doctor Who series

May 7, 2023 by EJ Moreno

The cast for Doctor Who is beginning to take shape, preparing fans for the upcoming new era.

The latest casting news comes from Jonathan Groff joining Ncuti Gatwa, Millie Gibson, and Jinkx Monsoon. The upcoming series marks the return of fan-favorite creator Russell T. Davies.

Little is known about Groff’s role and the new series, but Empire notes Groff will “first show up during Ncuti Gatwa’s initial run as the 15th incarnation of the Doctor” before adding he “hops aboard the TARDIS.”

Discussing joining the production, Jonathan Groff says, “I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!” Groff is best known for his work in Mindhunter, The Matrix Resurrections, Glee, and animated voice work like Frozen.

Davies, in a statement, says, “This is an incredible coup, and a great honor, to get such a huge star striding onto our set. So strap on your space boots; this is going to be a blast!”

Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with three special episodes featuring the iconic David Tennant as the 14th Doctor for the show’s 60th anniversary. Then, we’ll begin the new era with the next Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, who will take control of the TARDIS.
