Cult horror Leprechaun plans to scare up more gold with reboot

June 10, 2023 by EJ Moreno

You can’t keep a good Leprechaun down; at least, you can’t keep a “moderately well-received slasher franchise” down.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Lionsgate is again digging into their pot of gold in hopes of pulling out a winner: a new reboot of the iconic 90s horror film Leprechaun is currently in development.

Director Felipe Vargas will helm the project, with a script penned by Mike Van Waes, one of the writers on Disney’s new live-action Lilo & Stitch film. As for producing, Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon are on board, with Meredith Wieck and Jon Humphrey to oversee on behalf of Lionsgate.

Vargas is a relativity new director, best known for his work on the short film Milk Teeth, which is both a DGA Student Film Award and an Imagen Award winner. Before tackling this slasher reboot, Vargas will helm his feature debut with Rosario in Colombia.

Leprechaun debuted on the big screen with 1993’s titular entry, which starred a young pre-Friends, Jennifer Aniston. Since then, there have been five official sequels (all starring Warwick Davis), one 2014 reboot, and a requel from 2018 called Leprechaun Returns.

There are currently little to no details for the upcoming remake.
