Mortal Kombat 2 is gearing up and bringing the most iconic characters.
Simon McQuoid will return to direct from a script by Jeremy Slater in the upcoming follow-up to 2021’s cult classic Mortal Kombat. Deadline reports a host of new actors are filling out the key roles as Martyn Ford, Desmond Chiam, Ana Thu Nguyen, and Damon Herriman have all joined the sequel.
Per Deadline, Ford will play villainous Shao Kahn, Chiam will play King Jerrod, Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and Herriman as Netherrealm demon Quan Chi. For Jerrod and Quan Chi, this marks the first time the characters have appeared in a feature film. Shao Kahn and Sindel both appeared in the critical and commercial failure of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
These additions join fellow new castmates Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana, Tati Gabrielle’s Jade, and Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage. They’ll join Lewis Tan’s Cole, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao.
Ford is a bodybuilder and actor currently appearing in Sony’s The Machine; Chiam can be seen in the upcoming comedy Joy Ride, while Nguyen will star in Suka. Herriman mostly recently gained notoriety when he played Charles Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Netflix’s Mindhunter.
2021’s Mortal Kombat opened number one at the box office and went on to gross over $84M worldwide theatrically, also coming in as one of the most-watched titles in Max’s history. Mortal Kombat 2 is gearing up to begin production in Queensland, Australia, in the next few weeks.
