The Marvels stars discuss their “sisterly bond” on the MCU sequel

July 19, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Sitting down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani – the stars behind The Marvels – have dived into the upcoming MCU entry and spoken about their sisterly bond in an entertaining discussion.

“I’m excited that the MCU has three lead women, all from very diverse backgrounds, and they’re all baddies in their own way,” Parris tells the outlet. “It’s going to be really exciting just to see these smart, fun, intelligent, and troubled women find their way.”

Specifically, there’s a lot to address between Carol and Monica. “Carol is such a huge part of Monica’s life in Captain Marvel,” Parris explains. “When we see her in WandaVision, you get a sense that she has not talked to Carol in a very long time. So, we have to address the elephant in the room.”

Brie Larson recalls, “I understand that feeling of being afraid to let go of control, of being afraid of passing on responsibility to others. You almost want to take on all of the burden yourself. So, I think this is an incredible metaphor for learning how to be in a team. It’s a very clear example that no one person can do it all. You need all kinds of skill sets, all kinds of people with different viewpoints and different backgrounds in order to save the world.”

The Marvels director Nia DaCosta later adds, “It was a very sisterly bond on set,” saying of her leads. “It was really fun to see how their relationship mirrors their relationship in the movie.”

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels.’

The Marvels is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) and features a cast that includes Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, with Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

The Marvels is set for release on November 10th.
