Valek passed around the donation tin to the tune of $32.6 million at the North American box-office this weekend, as The Nun II easily kicked Denzel Washington from the top spot.
While it didn’t open anywhere near the original’s $53.8 million, a figure which remains a franchise-high for The Conjuring Universe, the $22 million budgeted sequel still managed to rake in an impressive $85 million worldwide.
The Michael Chaves directed film, which we called “tedious” and “without any real purpose” in our ★★ review, sees Taissa Farmiga reprising her role as Sister Irene, who once again has to go up against The Conjuring Universe‘s most iconic monster in Bonnie Aarons’ demon Valek.
Last week’s champ The Equalizer 3 took a hit to the gut with a 67% drop and a $12.1 million sophomore frame. However, this was enough to see Denzel Washington’s trilogy-capper rise to $61.9 million domestic, taking its worldwide cume of $107.7 million.
Another threequel to enter the charts was My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, which was written and directed by franchise creator Nia Vardalos, who also reprised her role from the original alongside John Corbett. These nuptials won’t be attended with anywhere near as many guests as those who contributed towards the original’s $368 million worldwide gross, with the film opening to a registry office level $10 million at the domestic box-office.
Other notable mentions were the performance of Hindi-language film Jawan, which opened in fourth place with a whopping $6.2 million from only 87 theatres, while Oppenheimer‘s $3 million weekend took its global tally to just shy of $900 million.
