Sofia Coppola has made her name in the industry outside of just the legacy of her family or by crafting massive blockbusters. Yet, there was almost a time when Coppola helmed one of the biggest franchise entries ever.
Speaking to Rolling Stone in a new interview, the filmmaker takes time away from promoting Priscilla to look back on her career. When of the biggest “What-Ifs” from her history seems to be what would’ve happened if Coppola helmed The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1?
She reveals to the outlet: “We had one meeting, and it never went anywhere.” She didn’t want more of Twilight‘s strange world because the director felt the project was too outlandish for her. She adds, “I thought the whole imprinting-werewolf thing was weird. The baby. Too weird!”
Coppola does feel there was a point where she could’ve helmed a franchise long before the finale and back when it was more of a haunted teen romance. She tells the outlet, “But part of the earlier Twilight could be done in an interesting way. I thought it’d be fun to do a teen vampire romance, but the last one gets really far out.”
It doesn’t seem like she’s opposed to genre pieces, adding, “I think it’d be fun to do sci-fi and I think it’d be fun to do, not like gory, but I like gothic horror,” she explained. “I don’t have an idea, though.”
