Highlander remake will feature Queen songs, confirms director Chad Stahelski

November 7, 2023 by Gary Collinson

We may be about to get a new Connor MacLeod in Henry Cavill, but when it comes to the soundtrack for a Highlander movie, there can be only one…

Thankfully, that seems to be the philosophy of John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski, who has confirmed that his upcoming remake of the cult classic action-fantasy will feature the iconic music of Queen.

“Yes,” Stahelski confirmed to The Wrap when asked if he plans to incorporate some of the original songs written and performed by the legendary British rock band for the soundtrack to the 1986 film. “Probably in a different way than you think, but hardcore yes.”

For those who may be unaware Queen produced several classic songs for the Highlander soundtrack, including ‘A Kind of Magic’, ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’ and ‘Princes of the Universe’, the latter of which also served as the opening song for the 90s TV series.

“We’re trying to encapsulate everything you loved about the original with more – meaning we want to ground it, we want it to be a great chance at world-building and mythology. But we still want to keep it fun,” Stahelski continued. “It’s like the Wick movies. You want to experience this world, you want to believe it’s real. But it’s also five degrees off from reality. This is a movie with immortals running around chopping each others’ heads off. There’s a certain ridiculousness to it. It’s like the Wick’s. We ride the tone. Everybody in the movie thinks its real. But we as an audience can get our heads around it – look, suspend disbelief. We’re trying to get you on board for this amazing journey with people who have lived hundreds of years. It’s a challenge. But I’m very excited.”

Although yet to be confirmed, it’s believed that cameras will roll on Stahelski’s Highlander reboot in 2024.
