Universal Pictures have tasked All Quiet On The Western Front‘s Edward Berger with reviving the Bourne franchise, and hope to entice Matt Damon back as the amnesiac spy.
Per Deadline’s report, the studio has started early development on a new entry in the Bourne franchise, and are looking to close a deal with Berger following the success of his Oscar-winning World War I epic.
At such an early stage in the process of reactivating Bourne, there are few details, but according to insiders close to Deadline, once a script is in place, Universal would return to Matt Damon and offer him the chance to star as Jason Bourne for a fifth time.
The last entry in the Bourne franchise was 2016’s Jason Bourne, which earned $415 million worldwide and saw Damon return to the role following Jeremy Renner’s brief stint as Aaron Cross in spin-off movie The Bourne Legacy. Prior to that the Bourne trilogy had arguably redefined the action-landscape, and grossed over $950 million at the global box-office, so it should come as no surprise that Universal would want to tap into that IP once more.
