Rob Reiner is bringing back the old band, and production on the sequel to This Is Spinal Tap is set to start early next year.
During a recent interview, Reiner confirmed that Spinal Tap II will begin filming soon with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer all returning.
“We’re making a sequel,” Reiner said on the RHLSTP with Richard Herring podcast. “We’re going to start shooting in the end of February, and everybody is back.”
Little details have been released, but the filmmaker teased that Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, and “a few other surprises” would be making cameos.
This Is Spinal Tap starred Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, characterized as “one of England’s loudest bands.” Reiner played Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, a documentary filmmaker who follows them on their American tour.
This is Spinal Tap saw critical acclaim upon its release but was met with only modest commercial success. During the VHSera, the film would find an audience and gain cult status. In 2002, the Library of Congress deemed it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.
