As we reported previously, the upcoming Twisters won’t be connected to the original 1996 movie and now we have confirmation from one of the lead actors in the project, Glen Powell, who will star in the new film alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones.
Speaking to Vogue while promoting his rom-com Anyone But You, Powell opens up about his work on the new film.
“It’s definitely not a reboot,” Powell states. “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.”
This goes with what writer Mark L. Smith says: “It’s a lot of fun. [Chung] did his own thing to the script a little bit because that’s what they do, so I don’t know about some of the changes exactly. So, I don’t know the details, but it’s a separate story. It’s not a continuation of the original. But it’s just a real wild ride with some good, fun characters. Hopefully, we can tap into what the original had because that thing is just iconic.”
Twisters will be directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) from a script by Mark L. Smith and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where The Crawdads Sing), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Brandon Perea (Nope), and Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts).
Twisters is set to release on July 19th, 2024.
