As the warp speed continues to malfunction on Paramount’s attempts to bring a fourth installment of the Star Trek franchise to the big-screen, the studio has decided to set a course for a different direction by announcing a prequel-film.
According to Deadline the studio has assigned the task of expanding their cinematic universe to Star Wars: Andor’s main director Toby Haynes, who will work from a script written by The Lego Batman Movie’s Seth Grahame-Smith.
At such an early stage in production plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is described as an origin story that takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film.
The prequel will be produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, who have been steering the universe since the Chris Pine-led reboot, a sequel to which is still reportedly in active development.
It has been a struggle trying to get a new Trek film on the big-screen since Star Trek Beyond‘s $343M worldwide gross was deemed a disappointment. We’ve had the tedious talk of the Tarantino Trek, a version from Fargo creator Noah Hawley that stalled in 2020, and a direct sequel which would have seen Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk meet up with his father George Kirk, played by Chris Hemsworth, reprising his role from the 2009 reboot as Kirk Sr., but that also hit the reverse thrusters.
