Get ready to return to the pages of The Book of Eli with an upcoming new series as Deadline reports that the film’s original creative team, including its directors the Hughes brothers, will return to bring life to a new installment.
Writer Gary Whitta returns to The Book of Eli to serve as creator/writer/executive producer of a potential TV series, which is labelled as a prequel and attached to the star as the titular Eli is actor John Boyega. He’ll step into the role made famous by Denzel Washington, who starred in the 2010 post-apocalyptic action film.
The Book of Eli film takes place thirty years after a nuclear catastrophe caused an ecocide and follows a nomad named Eli (Washington) who fights his way across a ravaged with a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation.
Little is known about the television series, but Deadline notes that it could be “set 30 years before the events in the film, which would put it around the time of the nuclear event or its immediate aftermath.”
Boyega is best known for his time in the Star Wars franchise, but recently re-impressed genre fans with his work in the 2023 cult classic They Cloned Tyrone opposite Jamie Foxx for Netflix. Joining another popular IP seems interesting for Boyega, but stepping into The Book of Eli could allow him to make his version of the character for the small screen.
The film’s producers, Alcon Entertainment, will handle the series, and Deadline notes they are about to take the project out to select premium buyers.
