Steven Spielberg has revealed an adaptation of Ready Player Two is in the works, but this time around he will only be on producer duties.
2018’s Ready Player One provided Spielberg with one of his biggest box-office hits in years, grossing over $600 million worldwide and earning largely positive reviews, so when author Ernest Cline released a sequel novel a couple of years later, an adaptation seemed like a no-brainer.
Spielberg was attending the post-Oscars Universal Pictures gala when he was asked by Showbiz411 about his involvement in a sequel, which he confirmed was coming, but also added that he would only be producing it.

Ready Player One is set in 2045, in a world on the brink of chaos and collapse, where the people of the world have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world, including an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), who decides to join the contest, and is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
Ready Player Two picks up days after Wade Watts has won James Halliday’s contest, when he makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday’s vaults, waiting for his champion to find it, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the OASIS a thousand times more wondrous and addictive than even Wade dreamed possible. With it comes a new riddle, and a new quest: a last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize.
