Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continued to leave a Kaiju-sized footprint at the worldwide box-office, and in the process crushed new releases Monkey Man and The First Omen.
Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong stomped its way to a sophomore weekend of $31 million, lifting the domestic total to $135 million, which already surpasses the pandemic-affected lifetime North American gross of its predecessor Godzilla vs. Kong ($100M).
The Adam Wingard-directed MonsterVerse movie also earned $59.3 million from overseas markets, taking its international cume to $226 million, $92 million of which has come from the Chinese market, for a worldwide figure of $361.1 million.
Godzilla x Kong‘s dominance had a clear knock-on affect to the performances of two buzzy new releases featuring Dev Patel and the Devil. Both Monkey Man (read our ★★★ review here) and The First Omen (read our ★★★ review here) came into the weekend off the back of positive reviews, but they failed to meet moderate projections.
Universal and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions released Dev Patel’s directorial debut Monkey Man, which placed second with an estimated $10.1 million, while The First Omen, a prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 seminal horror, also underwhelmed with an estimated $8.4 million.
