Aaron Sorkin has spoken previously about his desire to make a follow-up to The Social Network, and now it appears that he has found his inspiration with the news that he is writing a new movie examining Facebook’s role in the 2021 Capitol riots.
The Academy Award winning screenwriter was in conversation with Matthew Belloni on the latest edition of The Town podcast when he was asked about the effect Facebook’s algorithm might have had on democracy. Sorkin responded “Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this,” adding “I blame Facebook for January 6.”
Sorkin was pressed for more, specifically surrounding the events of January 6, 2021, confirming that he would be answering such questions, but said “you’re going to need to buy a movie ticket” to get them.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that sources close to Sorkin have confirmed that he is working on what they call a “Social Network-adjacent screenplay”, but that the project is only in the very early stages of development.
The West Wing creator had reportedly been working on a Capitol riots script before the Social Network link emerged, so maybe he has decided to merge the screenplays.
