Popular video game franchise Just Cause is once again booting up for a big-screen adaptation from Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the popular video game from Square Enix and Avalanche Studios has been picked up by Universal Pictures with Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto set to direct, and The Fall Guys duo of Kelly McCormick and David Leitch producing.
Launching in 2006, the Just Cause series has shipped over 35 million units worldwide and spawned multiple instalments, so there’s little wonder that Universal want to capitalise on the current trend of successful video game adaptations (Super Mario Bros. – $1.3 billion, Uncharted – $400 million, Five Nights at Freddy’s – $291 million) by finally trying to get this off the ground.
A long time project for Resident Evil producers Constantin Films, at one time Just Cause had Brad Peyton (Rampage) attached to direct, with Jason Momoa tapped to star.
Soto’s Blue Beetle was caught up in the tumultuous handover between DC’s regimes, but still managed to earn largely positive reviews and $130 million at the worldwide box-office.
Just Cause is a third-person shooter and a driving game that focuses on Rico Rodriguez, an operative for an organization known only as the ‘Agency’, who is dropped into various death-defying situations behind enemy lines.
