Here’s a selection of the biggest movie sequels of 2025 to add to your watchlist…
Deciding what to watch weekly can be difficult, but a list like this can help you start planning ahead. We’ve assembled seven films to watch in 2025 and added a sequel spin to this list.
Quite a few movies have already been added to the 2025 release slate, so let’s focus on follow-ups to some of the most popular films. From comedies to horror films, join us for a breakdown of the must-watch 2025 sequels. Check out our list and let us know what you’re looking forward to the most…
28 Years Later
We’ve asked for it, and Danny Boyle is finally delivering a follow-up to the iconic 28 Days Later.
Can the filmmaker still do horror? Has the zombie trend passed? Or is the combo of Boyle & Alex Garland too strong for that? So many questions will need to be answered with this long-awaited film.
With an all-star cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, it seems almost too prestigious to fail. With horror in a great spot right now, Boyle can add his mark on this generation like he did with the original.
John Wick Presents: Ballerina
How can we do a John Wick film without Wick himself? Ana de Armas will try as she leads this spin-off.
Ballerina comes from Underworld filmmaker Len Wiseman and could bring back that exact 00s action edge that is missing from the genre now. However, we’ve already seen one John Wick spin-off fail.
Ana de Armas will star as a woman out for revenge, taking over the lead role and finally stepping into her own as an action star. She stole the show in No Time To Die and could easily do it with the proper script and the pitch-perfect choreography the franchise is known for.
M3GAN 2.0
The killer robot doll stole our hearts in 2023 with her campy slasher film, and she’s returning with a major upgrade.
A M3GAN sequel was inevitable, but it doesn’t mean it can’t be good, if not better than the first entry. Taking what worked initially and applying it to M3GAN 2.0 with a clear focus will only lead to better kills and thrills.
At the very least, the sequel needs to find a way to become just as big of a pop culture moment as it did the first time. Somehow, the doll took over social media and stood out with audiences long before it came out. Upping the ante could put M3GAN on par with her peer, Chucky.
The Karate Kid
Another Karate Kid comes after Cobra Kai closes its run on Netflix, and it could be the event the franchise has been waiting for.
While the film won’t have the crossover cinematic event quality of something like Endgame, the new Karate Kid is shaping up to be not only a love letter to the franchise but a send-up of what’s come before.
Jackie Chan returns, as does Ralph Macchio, so expect a lot of nostalgia with a dash of new-gen flair. It could pay off and give longtime fans of the action-comedy franchise something to feast upon, or it could sadly feel like cheap bait to get as many “memba berries” as possible.
Mortal Kombat 2
We get another round of the bloody battles of Mortal Kombat, and the sequel looks to up the ante in every way.
Karl Urban joins the fold as fan-favorite Johnny Cage, and he brings along a gang of newcomers. Not only is the full roster of fighters finally together, but it all seems like we are getting a bit of a tournament.
The 2021 Mortal Kombat film wasn’t awful, but it left much to be desired. Give fans more blood, more fighting, and even more faithful adaptations of their favorite characters, and we could have the rare sequel surpassing the original. Now, all they need is a lot less Cole Young.
Captain America: Brave New World
Before its stellar new trailer, this spot could’ve gone to another franchise entry, but a knockout trailer had added hype to the film.
A fourth installment wasn’t on anyone’s wishlist with Chris Evans retiring from the role, but Anthony Mackie proved he is more than ready with his Disney+ series. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype.
Now, he dons the shield to fight the Red Hulk and whatever else Kevin Feige cooks up for this newly crowned hero. While it will be hard to fill the hole Evans’ Steve Rogers left in our hearts, Sam Wilson could kick some major ass in a way that we’ve seen from Captain America.
Avatar: Fire and Ash
James Cameron shocked us all with an Avatar sequel that made massive money and won over naysayers, and now he plans to do it again.
Taking us from the jungle to the seas worked for the second film, and now we’ll take to fire-filled isles for what could be the best one yet. As someone who was one of those hesitant fans, you can’t deny Cameron puts butts in seats.
Can he cook up another billion or two-billion-dollar movie with Avatar: Fire and Ash? The way audiences are hungry for real spectacle says all signs point to Cameron whooping at the box office again. We need one great gimmick and a seriously awesome trailer to get everyone back on board.
